7.27-30.14 Long Drive Home to NC & MD

Day 40-
We left Colorado and jusr drove east. I listened to Pink Floyd's "Darkside of the Moon" the whole time we drove through Kansas. I really wanted to check out the Wizard of Oz museum but it was a little out of our way and I felt that it would mostly be a collection of memorabilia.

We got dinner at R.J.'s Bob-Be-Que Shack in Mission, Kansas just before we entered Missouri. It was really good barbeque. It helped get us through the night. I was awake when we drove by St. Louis at night. The Stan Musial Veteran's Bridge was beautiful! I would like to come back and explore St. Louis.

Day 41-
We drove through the night. I thought we were going to go Asheville in the morning but plans changed. We have to drive through thick fog in the Smoky Mountains at dawn. We went to Hooker Falls by Brevard, NC. We were travel weary and ready to go home. This was a quick stop. We swam under the waterfall and even learned how to crawl behind it and slide under the waterfall into the base. There was a daring family that taught us. They were diving from the top of the waterfall into the bottom. It was cold and after our previous jump in California I had enough of silly risks.

We got to the Chapel Hill area that evening and reunited with Christina's old room mate. We had dinner at The Pig Restaurant. We enjoyed more barbeque and I tried their gumbo and mac-n-cheese. We went out that night but I was pretty finished with being social.

Day 42-
Last day. We finished watching Season 2 of Orange is the New Black. I wandered down Franklin Street while we finish some last business in Chapel Hill. We completed the tradition of ordering food from the Mediterranean Deli to take home.

It was the hardest part of the trip to come home. I sat in silence in the passenger seat as I reflected. I had no where to run to. I would come back home and face everything that I had left behind. I was sad. We also hit the worst traffic in our entire trip during the last ride. There was traffic on I-495 between Northern Virginia and our destination. Eventually we made it through and arrived home.

It was an intense six week period. We did a lot. All I wanted to do was get home and do nothing. The traveler's depression was creeping in with the exhaustion. I wish I had a happier homecoming. I had a happy trip.

7.24-27.14 Boulder, CO (Denver, CO)

Day 37 (PM)-
We drove through the day and the one thing we most looked forward to was eating at the first Chipotle in Denver, Colorado. We held off eating Chipotle the whole summer because we really wanted to make this experience special. I ordered a quesarito. They took a tortilla and made a quesadilla and wrapped my burrito within. There was melted cheese in every single bite of my burrito... so delicious.

I got in touch with my old friend from high school, Fidel. We met up at their brother's house. He took us to the Flatirons overlooking Boulder, Colorado. We saw the sunset and then explored downtown Pearl Street. We saw a street performer that juggled fire. Fidel took us to a few fun places in downtown. We went into a candy store that has nearly every soda flavor imaginable. It is called Rocket Fizz. They had fun toys and gadgets too. We checked out Pearl Street Pub and tried their fried mac-n-cheese. It was good. It had a dive bar feeling with low basement ceilings and games like darts and pool. We met with some of the taco tribe at Conor O'Neill's Irish Pub & Restaurant. There was a reggae band performing. There were a lot of young drunk people. I was happy to spend sometime with the lovely taco family. They had been exploring Colorado and fell in love with Boulder. We still didn't have a place to stay in Boulder but hoped for the best. I figured I could try the taco route and befriend their hosts. All we needed was some floor space. Eventually we pieced together some couchsurfing hosts. We ended up sleeping in my minivan that night. We quickly checked out one more place before we left downtown Boulder. Press Play is an arcade theme bar. They had walls lined with video game machines and arcade games. There was a live karaoke band playing that night. I don't sing karaoke and we had a long day. Their decor was really cool.

Day 38-
We went to Red Rock Amphitheater early in the morning outside of Denver. I know that I will return and experience a concert at this venue one day. There were so many people there exercising on the steps. Christina took the opportunity to run. It was insane! Afterwards, we went to the Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium where the Broncos play. Christina explored their sports museum. We went to Masterpiece Deli for lunch. We split a Beef Brisket Sandwich and a salad. They even had horchata in their fountain soda machine.

We connected with our couchsurfing host. He hosted many travels and was also a traveler. He was into bicycles and had several in his garage. It was a great opportunity for Christina to learn how to ride a bike. It was the first time I rode a bike in possibly over 10 years. We decided to try the local option of riding bicycles to Avery Brewing Tap Room. It was my first time riding a bike on a main road. Christina rode a tandem with our host. At the brewery we enjoyed several rounds of samplers. I really enjoyed their "The Reverend Belgian-Style Quad." We befriended a couple that recently moved to Boulder from Northern Virginia. We invited them to join us for a hike the next day.

Day 39-
We met the next morning at Moe's Broadway Bagel. Fidel would be our guide to the top of Bear Peak. The summit as at 8460 ft. we began our hike near 5000 ft. It was intense. There were large rocks to climb. I am afraid of heights so that was something else I had to deal with as we got higher and higher. It was totally worth it. The view was amazing. We saw the entire city and the Rocky Mountain range. We stopped inside NCAR, the National Center for Atmospheric Research after our hike. The had really cool exhibits. You could feel what a cloud felt like in one of the exhibits.

We went to Odd 13 Brewing for dinner in Lafayette, CO. Our bodies needed carbs. They had an amazing pizza food truck in their patio that day. Odd 13 has a food truck rotation. We were lucky that there was pizza that night. I learned that I really like the pineapple, pepperoni, jalapeno styling. As for beers, Odd 13 creates brew personalities like superheroes and villains. I really liked the "Big Jim." Fidel's family came and joined us at the brewery.

We had to leave to connect with a different host for this night. They were at work and their friend who is also hosting and made the connection would meet to give us his apartment key. He was really welcoming and made us feel at home. We binged on "Orange is the New Black  before going to sleep. Out host had previous plans that night. We didn't connect for long since we had to leave really early in the morning.

Day 40 (AM)-
The last place we checked out in Colorado was Glazed & Confused Donuts in Denver, CO. We bought a box full of donuts for the long ride back east. They have so many different flavors and styles. They even have their version of the cronut called puffy nut. It was sweet.

7.23-24.14 Albuquerque, NM & Santa Fe, NM (Four Corners Monument)

Day 36-
Next stop: Four Corners Monument
We took a little detour by the Little Colorado River Gorge. We bought some crafts from the vendors at the Artisan Market. Hours later we arrived to the Four Corners. We each paid the $5 entrance fee and took our pictures while standing on Utah, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico simultaneously. We shared some fry bread and I hooped in the desert before we continued on the journey.

More hours of driving and snacking in the minivan. We arrived in Albuquerque in the evening. We met our host, a friend of a friend. They were kind enough to host us on short notice. Christina and I still needed food so we went to a Mexican restaurant, Tacos Mex Y Mariscos. I ordered a plate of chicken flautas with rice, beans, and salad. I ate everything on that plate. During dinner we planned a self-guided Breaking Bad tour of ABQ.

We drove the Walter White's house, ate chicken nuggets at the Twister's that they used as Los Pollos Hermanos, Jesse Pinkman's house and Marble Brewery where Brian Cranston and the crew would frequent for drinks.

We met back at our host's home where I tagged along with him around the corner to briefly meet more of my friend's friends. I got more of an insight into his hard core punk glory days. It was good night.

Day 37 (AM)-
We woke up early to begin the travel north. In the haze and lack of routine, I left my keys on top of the van. They flew off somewhere on Interstate 25 as we were leaving Albuquerque. I realized my loss when we arrived in Santa Fe, NM. I was really upset but thankful we had brought two sets of car keys. To New Mexico - I leave my set of keys and big key chains.

In Santa Fe, we visited the Georgia O'Keefe Museum. I appreciate learning about her as an individual and not just her paintings. She was amazing. I thought it was interesting to study her struggle with identity in her time. As Alfred Stieglitz's wife and model, she was completely sexualized and that was how the public was introduced to her. She was a strong figure but critics could not see beyond that aspect of her femininity. Her paintings and genres did not captivate me before. They still feel like flowers and landscapes. I appreciate her use of color. I appreciate her life. I appreciate her strength and power.

After losing my keys, I was still in a funk. There is so much to see in Santa Fe. We wandered through the plaza and found Palacio Cafe for lunch. I got a vegetarian santawich with toasted whole wheat bread, avocado, tomato, arugula, cucumber, red pepper, onions, sprouts, and a honey mustard vinaigrette. I picked up a few brochures from the art museums. I know I will come back to Santa Fe one day.

7.21-22.14 Grand Canyon, AZ

Day 34-
We left Los Angeles this morning. We survived our adventures in the city of angels. Took showers. Ate a delicious kale & avocado salad at a restaurant called Green Peas. They had really refreshing water with fresh orange slices. We enjoyed listening to the radio music on the freeway on our way east. It was the perfect drive.

The desert began to unfold before us. We began a journey similar to the one in "Wristcutters" and made Gogol Bordello our soundtrack to the desert. We arrived to the Grand Canyon after sunset. We found a campsite outside of the National Park. I really appreciate that they were available and free considering all the campgrounds in the Grand Canyon were full. The stars were brilliant. We rested on the warm hood of the minivan. Applying heat to our sore bodies. This would be our third night sleeping in the van. It was dark, we were tired, we would rise early in the morning to watch the sunrise over the Grand Canyon.

Day 35-
We woke up at 4:30am and drove to Grandview Point to watch the sunrise. We climbed down to find a spot for ourselves. It was inspiring to watch that disk rise over the horizon.

After the sunrise we figured that we would explore the visitor's center to educate ourselves about this site. Along the way we found a pull out that gave us a beautiful view. We stretched our sore bodies. We did a few yoga poses along the edge, facing the sun. I played with my hoop overlooking the canyon. It felt glorious. I love hooping! I had completely forgotten all the pain and trauma my body had experienced the other day.

At the visitors center we learned about the site. We made plans for the next 24 hours considering that we still did not know exactly where we would be staying in New Mexico. Originally we were going to leave the Grand Canyon after sunrise and continue exploring the southwest. we both felt that it would be an injustice so we decided to spend the day there and leave the next morning.

We bought souvenirs at the market before we even started to explore the park. We boarded a shuttle that would take us down Hermit Road - FROM HERMIT FALLS TO HERMIT ROAD.
We got off the shuttle at Powell's Point and began our hike along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. We barely made it to the next stop before we found our own point along the Grand Canyon. I cleverly called it Powellopi Point because it was between Poweel and Hopi.
We hiked all the way to Monument Creek Vista and hopped on the shuttle to get us back to the visitor center. I passed out completely on the ride. I was exhausted.

We visited the Tusayan Museum & Ruins and the Yavapai Geology Museum before getting ready to enjoy the sunset. We found another point and I laid down to enjoy the view. The light passing through the canyon was beautiful. Red stone illuminated. The Colorado River glowed. There were blue shadows. The sun sank back into the horizon.

We were hoping to stay out late to see the stars but the clouds started rolling in. I am also afraid of the dark. A shuttle picked us up on our hike back. We joined the party bus and got a ride back to our car. Another night sleeping in our van. We would drive out early the next morning.

7.20.14 Hermit Falls & Sunset Beach (Los Angeles, CA)

Day 33-
I am alive. I meditated on the duality of being. I was in a place where I could choose to either do something or not do it. There was no such thing as trying. Either I jump or I don't jump. It was my choice to make. Complete freewill.

We began our day with clean laundry and relaxation. Waiting for the moment our friends would meet us to journey together. Once they arrived, we followed them to pick up a friend. We took advantage of their need to refuel  to fuel our bodies with food. We went to Shanghai Dumpling House in San Gabriel to share a meal.

We followed James to the trail in the San Gabriel Mountains. It was a steep and narrow winding trail that led downhill to Hermit Falls. At the end of the hike, we arrived to a local summer hangout. Red Hot Chili Peppers were playing on someone's speakers. It was a Sunday afternoon. Christina was preparing her for the jump. I was just taking in the moment perfectly at peace between action and inaction. I would either jump or not jump. We sat on a boulder cliff overlooking a 55 foot drop into a 12 foot deep pool of fresh water.

The people there were jumping in, challenging each other to jump or just spectators. After a while Christina was almost ready. She hung around the edge of the cliff. I stayed far away. I knew that looking over the cliff would have scared me. Eventually she was in position and people were cheering, counting down her jump. She did it.

I talked to Chavo about his experience. I wanted to have that in my life. Christina came back alive. I knew i had made it this far. I knew that I  probably wouldn't be there again with friends that i trusted. I would not have this opportunity again. I decided to stand up and do it,

My last thought was "I am afraid of heights." I looked at a rock ledge jutting out directly beneath trying to will myself to keep my legs straight like a pencil as I dropped. My fall wasn't as long as others had led me to believe. I didn't have enough time to straighten my body vertically. The wind picked up my legs. I broke the surface of the water with my butt and brutalized the exposed flesh on the back of my thighs. I was scared when I jumped. I liked the moment underwater waiting for the water to lift me back up to the surface. I emerged from the water to the affirmation that I had completely failed the pencil method. I learned that I did not know how to cliff jump. I was a leap of faith. I sat along the edge and let the cold water cool my bruised thighs.

When I was ready, I made my way towards a rock that had been tagged by Banksy. I stood on it knowing that "BANKSY WAS HERE." Eventually after awkwardly standing there, I decided I needed to climb back up and meet with my friends. A child climbing down passed me the rope and helped me up. I survived. I was still alive. Christina and I would be the only ones from our group to make the jump that day. Some had experienced it and knew themselves and the current state of their bodies to handle the impact. We still had to hike back up the mountain.

We recollected at our cars and made plans for the evening. It would be the last night on the West Coast for 3 of us. We decided to go to Sunset Beach to enjoy ice cream while watching the sunset. The entire drive, I reflected upon my experience. I saw myself in the rearview mirror as the road unfolded before us. I was sitting behind the driver in the back seat. He had selected the perfect music for that moment. I saw the vision that I had seen in my dreams earlier in the trip. The woman without a face. I had become her. She was me. I was cold. The wind blew my hair across my face. The reflection of my shawl was superimposed over my face. I thought about the entire trip and all the stupid things I had done in my life. I was ready to grow up. I love my life. I took the jump and I was ready. The fall left me bruised and sore. I was thankful to be alive. I kept discovering additional injuries from the impact. I found a bruise on my chest from where my chin must have slammed because I found a bruise under my chin and within my lip. I imagine this is what a car accident must feel like. The difference is that I willfully jumped off that cliff. I learned a lot from that experience. I have stories to tell.

The wind on the beach was cold. We trembled with our ice cream cones in hand. Cornettos fix everything. We stepped into the tide and discovered that the water was warm. Chavo confronted his nemesis and joyously jumped into the ocean. A few years ago he lost feeling in his leg the last time he was in the ocean. He has worked very hard to rehabilitate his body and is truly an inspiration. Soon we would all join him in the Pacific Ocean swimming and riding the waves as the sun set over the beach. It was perfect. An amazing day.

Chavo invited us over to his home for one last BBQ. He has taken care of us for  great portion of the summer. His father taught me how to make chile in their kitchen. Chavo grilled the meat outside. That night we enjoyed carne asada in great company. I was thankful Much peace and much love. <3

7.17-18.14 Los Angeles, CA

Day 30-

We made it to a friend's house late last night. Spent the morning sleeping. California has really been a place to sink into the vacation feeling of this trip. Its been "go" for the majority of this trip but we got to California and there has been no rush. No where to go. Nothing to do. Just relax. Our host lives in Culver City. You could see Sony Studios down the street. Parking has been interesting. We have to make sure that we move the car for street cleaning. Got the car checked early this morning at Liberty Tires so that we are prepared to go back east. They suggested we check out Venice Beach. It was down the street.

We spent our afternoon at Venice Beach. It reminded me a bit of that feeling of walking through Electric Forest. There were a lot of visuals. Our goal was the beach but we got distracted by street performers on the boardwalk. We spent an hour watching a group of acrobats and break dancers make jokes and liven the crowd. It was great!

At the beach, we ate the worst food ever on the trip - terrible! Slice of cheese pizza, not fresh-squeezed lemonade (they lied to me), and I finally got deep-fried oreos. I like to call deep-fried oreos "Unicorn Poop" - one is delicious, two is pushing it, too much and you're done. Its quite terrible for your body. I considered getting some at the festivals we attended earlier this summer but missed those opportunities.

We walked past muscle beach and all the shops and finally got to the water. We just relaxed. It was nice to swim in the water. It was a perfect day. We slept on the sand.

Later that night we would reconnect with our friends in California at the Hammer Museum. There was a free special event connected to their Made in L.A. exhibit. We thought that Alex Ebert from Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes would perform. We were disappointed when we realized he was only hosting and did not have his own set. It was cool to see him. He had a brief interview on stage with KCRW. It was still fun to feel young and cultured. Sophisticated drinking Georgia Peach cocktails with golden dinosaur stirrers in the middle of the museum courtyard. There were strange videos projected on the walls and local music performances. The gallery spaces were filled with contemporary art made by local artists.

After we realized Alex was not going to perform, we left and our friends took us to In-n-Out. They made sure we had animal-style burgers and animal-style fries. They tasted fresh. we had one more stop on our Thursday night adventure. We regrouped at Millions of Milkshakes in West Hollywood. They make milkshakes with Ferrero Rocher chocolates. The "Million Dollar Shake" is made with strawberries and Ferrero Rocher. I ordered a "Mr. Pink" with banana, cookie dough and Ferrero Rocher. One of my favorite memories is when we formed a tasting ring. The milkshakes rotated as we passed them to left to sample the different flavors. The people on the streets late that night were very stylish. I knew I was no where near their level in terms of fashion.

Day 31-
We woke up late again - no plans. Today we would city hike. We hiked to the metro station. Got to Hollywood and did touristy things. I got coffee at Starbucks. We hiked away to a really great Italian deli called I Panini di Ambra. The owner was really nice. Her food was amazing! I ordered a Chicken Salad. She suggested we check out the Griffith Observatory. We didn't make it because it was in the opposite direction from the sites in Hollywood. From the deli we wandered, we saw the Hollywood sign from a distance. We found an old book store and cd store. We kept walking until we got back to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. We checked out the Chinese Theater. We were pretty let down by the filth in the shops in Hollywood. It was a pattern of liquor stores, head shops, and costumes shops.

I missed walking... so we walked and took a bus to LACMA, Los Angeles County Museum of Art. On the way we found a smoothie truck! It was organic and the owner grew up in Montgomery County, Maryland too. He was cool people and also advised us to check out  a few things in the city. LACMA had an Alexander Calder exhibit that I wanted to see but they wouldn't let me in for free. I was tired and decided I'd rather check the rest of their collection for free than spend money on viewing that exhibit. I like Calder but not that much. It was getting late anyways. When we left, there was live jazz music in the plaza.

My feet hurt and we were supposed to meet our host for dinner. Eventually we got back to their home by bus. It took some waiting and patience since we were unfamiliar with their public transit system. We we finally met up, we went out for sushi at Shibuki: Brown Rice Sushi Restaurant. Christina talked us into meeting some of her old friends at the Culver Hotel Bar. We sat inside the space. They had a live band playing Michael Jackson and other pop songs. Above, an old film was silently projected on the wall. There was Wizard of Oz memorabilia around because a lot of the cast stayed in that hotel during the filming.

7.16.14 Big Sur

Day 29-

We drove south... We got to Monterrey but we didn't know what to check out or where exactly to go. We briefly stopped by Lovers Point Beach. We got back onto the road and drove along the Coastal Highway - California State Route 1.

We went to Pfeiffer Beach where there are beautiful boulders and purple sand. we spent time reflecting with the waves crashing around us as sat on top of the rocks we climbed. We didn't stay for to long. I wanted to see the McWay Falls in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park but we drove past it and had to get to Los Angeles by a certain time.

False Preeminence of Travel

I just booked two flights for this fall... I know there are more places I will travel to this year.

I don't quite understand what I am doing. I feel over confident. Precarious. Guarded yet daring.

I would like to be more cautious but all I see are the million directions I want to go towards.

I am waiting for my paychecks. I want the finances to balance out before I keep digging deeper into the illusion of money that I don't quite have at the moment.

I have no idea how many miles I added to my minivan over this summer. I can see that I spent $749.85 on gas & fuel for my summer road trip. It was a trip where cost were split exactly down the middle between us two travelers.

I still have $5,2770 to pay on my school loans. It is a number that feels small. I expect to pay it off by next summer.

I need to get my priorities in order. Travel seems to be surpassing everything. I understand the flaw in that logic. I need to work hard before I can go ahead and just disappear for a few days. I want to take care of my debts before adding onto them. Pay day cannot come any sooner.

7.11-13.14 Portland, OR (Multnomah Falls & Crater Lake)

Day 24-
We arrived late last night in Portland, welcomed to our first couchsurfing experience. We had no idea where we would stay in this city. Luckily Daniella had accepted to host us in her spare room. She welcomed us with her boyfriend Noah. We watched "Captain Phillips" on her laptop on the porch.

The next day she invited us to a free yoga class and offered to show us around Portland. We went to 10th & Adler to get lunch from the food trucks. Food trucks in all directions! It was a sight to behold. I decided to get the Baby Cheezus from The Grilled Cheese Grill. I don't know why i never made a grilled cheese burger before. It was a grilled cheese with a burger, lettuce, and tomato. it made me happy.

We got lost in Powell's Books and spent a lot of time at Buffalo Exchange. I found a summer dress and some sea green pants that matched my hair color. I received the most complements for my hair in Portland. It was interesting to notice.

We returned to Daniella's and rested before going out that night. We went to Lardo for dinner. They had amazingly delicious pulled pork  sandwiches. I had the Korean Pork Shoulder and it gave me the greatest food buzz. We were also drinking that night. After dinner, we  went to Crush Bar and crashed a transvestite dance party. Good drinks and fun music, we continued the party at their home when we found her housemate still awake. We stayed up on the porch sharing and making more memories.

Day 25-
We woke up hungover the next morning. Daniella was expecting a Swedish couple to couchsurf. I had connected with a friend of a friend who invited me to a samba class. I went to samba while the group hiked to the Saturday Market.

I did not know what to expect when I arrived at Ankeny Street Studio. Pauline led a very technical samba no pe class. She helped refine some of my movement. The second half of the class focused on  a routine that they were rehearsing. I was so lost. I really liked their choreography. It inspired me to keep learning and dancing.

After samba, I was given a ride to the waterfront to meet up with the group. They were still on their way so Greta gave me a tour of the bridges before dropping me off at Voodoo Donuts. I stood in line as the group walked over. In line, I won a t-shirt when I correctly named the Bacon Maple Bar Donut in a round of "Name That Donut!" By the time the group arrived, 45 min later, I was close to the entrance and we could order our donuts. Christina and I got a box: Mango Tango, Mexican Hot Chocolate, No Name, Bacon Maple Bar, and we sampled the Portland Cream too.

We sat in the shade on the grass near the waterfront to enjoy the voodoo. We wandered through the Portland Saturday Market before parting ways for the afternoon. They went to another market while we wandered and discovered Stumptown Coffee and the Lan Su Chinese Garden. We relaxed on the couch at Stumptown listening to Mac Demarco and Girls. In the Garden, we strolled and relaxed in the beauty of it all. We tried to forget the ugly buildings and loud music beyond the walls.

We refueled with some gyros from a food truck before hiking back to Daniella's house. they had a BBQ for dinner, we brought them beer and socialized. I played with my LED hoop in the dark. We slept on her couch that night. We were thankful that she let us stay an extra night.

Day 26-
We woke up early on Sunday morning to hike Multnomah Falls. It was exhausting. There were a lot of switchbacks. It felt simple but it was really high in elevation. It was beautiful.

We drove back to meet with the group to watch the world cup final. That didn't quite work out. I was happy the world cup was over. Germany won. Argentina lost. It was a long game.

We drove south after the world cup and drove to Crater Lake. We stayed to watch the sunset and to watch the full red moon rise from the edge of the crater. It was a magical experience. We drove through the night to arrive in San Francisco the next morning.

7.10.14 Olympic National Park & Mount St. Helens

Day 23-
I wanted fresh bread from a French Bakery we walked past at the Pike Place Market. we had a long drive ahead of us. We woke up early and I bought a baguette, pain au chocolat, and a cafe au lait from Le Panier. It was everything I want in that moment.

We drove further west to Olympic National Park. we didn't know exactly where we were going but we found a lake with scary furry trees. I think it was called Crescent Lake. we had a little picnic there with Kermit and Timothy. We packed the "family" and headed to the visitor center to make the most of our short time in the park. The park ranger told us that the best views of the mountain were on top of Hurricane Ridge. We drove up the winding road up the mountain. We were rewarded with stunning views of the ice covered glaciers. On the other side, we could see across the water to Vancouver. We didn't stay for long because we had to arrive in Portland that night. We did see Mount Ranier and Mount St. Helens on the way into Portland.

7.9.14 Seattle, WA

Day 22-
My friend Ivan hosted us for a couple of nights in Seattle. We arrived late last night but he hung out with us and showed us the roof top of his apartment. We didn't stay in Seattle for long. Parking is expensive in big cities. His apartment was in a perfect location that had every site within walking distance.

In the morning, we walked to Pike Place Market. We wandered through, looking at arts and crafts. Sampling their foods... including: chili jams, raspberry wine vinagrettes, chocolate covered cherries, smoked salmon. We even saw fishes being tossed. I loved the flower bouquets. I felt that they were very beautiful and inexpensive. The way the vendors arranged the flowers had a strong sense of balance, color, and space. They were very harmonious. So gorgeous!

We discovered Ellenos Greek Yogurt! A man on the corner had a tray of samples and beckoned us to try one, try all. It was the best greek yogurt EVER! The chai was really rich in flavor. We continued wandering and found the Gum Wall. It was surprisingly colorful. It was also sticky. After we put our gum on the wall, I made my way towards Beecher's Handmade Cheese for their Mac&Cheese. I was told that it was so good that Oprah has it flown over to her. The fresh cheese curds were amazing. The Mac&Cheese was creamy. I realized that I prefer baked Mac&Cheese. It was too cheesy for my and I didn't get bread to eat it with to balance out the consistency. Luckily we remembered there was a soccer match. We went to Cantina de San Patricio in Pike Alley. I enjoyed a beer and tortilla chips with my Mac&Cheese from Beecher's.

We continued wandering around the city. I decided that we could walk to the EMP Museum and explore before we had to meet my friend back at his apartment. The EMP was awesome! EMP stand for Experience Music Project. The building was designed by Frank Gehry. the forms were beautiful and reflected the light all around. We entered the building with a very limited amount of time. We explored their exhibits: Sound of Horror Film Scores, Science Fiction & Fantasy, Nirvana, Hendrix, and Music Videos (Spectacle). We sped through the exhibits considering that we had to go back to let my friend into his apartment. He had forgotten he had a work related social event to attend and we forgot to tell him how short our stay was.

We returned to the Space Needle area. I wanted to see the Chihuly Garden & Glass but they wouldn't admit us in for free so we settled for their gift shop. I peeked over the hedges. I didn't care much for his work anyways. It was evening and everything was closing. We walked over the the Olympic Sculpture Park and walked along the waters' edge back towards Pike Place Market. We decide to order something from the original Starbucks. With coffee in our hands, we watched the sunset over the Pacific in the grassy area by the market. We walked back to the apartment and did some travel research. we spent the last night in Seattle having life conversations with our host before sleep.

7.8.14 Missoula, MT... arriving in the Pacific Northwest

Day 21-
We left Yellowstone National Park this morning. I woke up to some crazy game of Thrones meets Electric Forest dream. Our escape plan was to get soda and candy at the corner store. Gary oldman was a doomed protagonist figure.

We are driving northwest through Montana listening to Kanye. Letting our loved ones know that we are still alive through dropped calls.

We spent most of the day driving. We stopped in Missoula, Montana at the Blue Bison Grill for lunch. Christina really wanted to try Bison meat. I felt a little guilty but I ordered the White Bison taco. It was bison, mushrooms, and cheese in a fry bread taco.

We happened to be in the bar during the Brazil vs. Germany world cup match. It was painful to watch. We continued west after our meal. The sun was setting as we arrived to Seattle. It was perfection as we arrived to the West Coast. The sunset over the George Gorge with windmills spinning in the background. We go closer to the city and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" played on the radio. I felt so happy knowing that we had arrived.

7.6-7.14 Yellowstone National Park & Grand Teton National Park

Day 19-
I woke up from a dream, cramped in the back of my van. Today was a day of exploration and discovery. It feels like each new day is actually. We reorganized the van in the morning from our search the day before.
I finally had cereal with the milk that Christina craved so much. I didn't have much of an appetite. I was exhausted and my body hurt. Christina drove today. I slept int he passenger seat.
We left our campsite at Indian Creek and began our day at Sheepeater Cliff. The water was beautiful. I loved the tiny blue butterflies that surrounded us.

As we headed to our next destination, we found a beautiful waterfall along the side of the road. We stopped to appreciate it. We continued to Canyon Village and explored the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. We stopped in the Visitor Center. I learned why this place got its name. We hiked along the north rim and south rim of the canyon. We found a double rainbow at the base of the falls. I found a small tree to meditate next to at our Sublime Point. we relaxed, stretched, and did yoga at this Sublime Point overlooking the canyon.

Our next destination at Yellowstone was Norris. We wandered along all the paths and viewed all geysers, hot springs, vents, etc...
Today we saw Elk bucks? Moose?
Life is too much to describe. Trying my best to remember. Disconnected. Holiday weekend. Mind lost. Overload.

Day 20 -
Yellowstone National Park
1. Excelsior Geyser Crater - Enjoying the steam warmth
2. Grand Prismatic Spring - Full spectrum visible in the steam as well as the surface. I don't understand.
3. (Biscuit Basin - Biscuits are delicious)
Sapphire Pool - Deep well. Gorgeous blue. Clear water. Steam bath for our skin. Cooling breeze. Perfection.
4. Mystic Falls - Climbing. Drinking fresh water. Feeling hot springs. Pedicure on the rocks. Beauty surrounds. My most favorite place on this entire trip. Hiking the trail to Mystic Falls had the most beautiful smell of pine. I thought of you. I breathed in the air. Experiencing the present moment.
Thank you Earth, Water, Wind, Fire, and Spirit.
5. Old Faithful - Watching water boil... Waiting for the main event... Crowds of spectators.
6. Lake Lewis - Clear waters. Schools of fish. Volcanic stones.

Grand Teton National Park
Lake Jenny - We arrived in the evening. Our goal was to hike to Inspiration Point  at Grand Teton and get back to our car before sunset... This was quite honestly, one of the scariest things I have ever done.

A coyote appeared before our trail with an animal in its mouth. It had yellow eyes. I didn't know what to do. I froze along the side of the trail as it ran past us. A man was running after it. I asked him, "Is that yours?"

I have a fear of natural bodies of water at night. I panicked as we approached Hidden Falls. I ran across bridges, terrified of trolls. We saw more wild life grazing. The view from the top was beautiful.(elevation: 6782 feet).

7.5.14 Wyoming Scenic Byways

Day 18-
I am going to change my life.
I like signs.

I wanted to know what the speed limit was. I sure found out - I got pulled over for speeding Wyoming. They searched our entire van. They were really kind. It was the first time I ever sat in the back of a police vehicle. Maybe it was the hoops in the back of the car, my green hair, and the tie-dye I was wearing.

I still broke the law. They left us with a citation and let us go. I learned. It was exactly what I needed in my life. A reminder. Treachery of beauty. Distractions.

Take your time to enjoy the scenery. Enjoy your surroundings. There was no rush. Nowhere to be. We had actually configured an extra day - that time was spent with Wyoming State Patrols in the middle of nowhere.

Our day began early at Devils Tower in Wyoming. We complete an early morning hike before getting on our way towards Yellowstone National Park tonight. Devils Tower was impressive. A sacred sight, it scared me and set the tone for the day. I didn't quite understand how it was standing. Land eroded around a magma plug for thousands of year. I learned that many of the sites we drove past were dated to their prehistoric existence. Dinosaurs began to make sense.
Once upon a time, there were rivers, oceans, volcanoes. Today we have mountains and plains, valleys and creeks.

I drove the entire day, we drove through 3 scenic byways: US-16, US-212, US-14... not sure exactly in which order.

We stopped by a lake shore to rest in Big Horn National Forest. The field of flowers was gorgeous. Purple and little white flowers filled the field by the lake. The sun was shinning and everything was perfect. Families were fishing. We sat by the lake and reflected on life. Fear of the unknown. being both scared and excited by all that life has in store ahead.

Carrying our excitement and taking in all the beauty, we continued on the journey. Life was so beautiful and amazing that I failed to find the speed limit. Life felt limitless. I learned how to use the speed cruiser. I thought that the speed limit was 75~80 mph. I was wrong.
I accelerated and passed the wrong car. I forgot to adjust the speed back down and had to pull over when that car began to flash lights behind me.

It was okay. I found peace during the situation. The officer was doing his job. I was thankful for his care and leniency. We had both gone to the same University. After the entire ordeal, I smiled. I was happy. Sure a citation is unfortunate but I accept it. It was ironic and hilarious. It was what it was and everything happens for a reason.

During the ride, after adjusting my outlook on life, I began to attach new memories to an album that has had heavy emotional significance to me. I let go of past memories. Grateful for all of them. Grateful for their significance. Now I saw life ahead of me. On a journey. Heading west. Staying illuminated. The future was out there. It was bright and oh so beautiful.

"My dearest friend, you'll soon begin to love again."
Devendra Banhart - My Dearest Friend - Thunder Rolls Down Smokey Canyon

History was behind us. Life is amazing. I am thankful.
(Moment hit me as we drove by the Jim Bridger Trail)

4 hours left, we proceed down the most beautiful route in the United States. Turns and curves, ups and downs, snow covered mountains, deep valleys - it became our own self guided tour of America. That is what this has really always been. Forging our own path. Every turn presented a different perspective on our landscape. I understood everything. I knew nothing.
We listened to Devendra the entire time. It was exactly what I needed in that moment. I felt so happy.

Eventually, we arrived to Yellowstone. We explored and wondered. We adventured, trying to find a campsite for the night. Now, here I am with a beverage in hand, sitting under the stars with a flash light. We saw beautiful bison! I had been getting depressed for the past few days knowing that the plains that had been dominated by them were populated by cattle instead. Bison were hunted to near extinction. The best part was seeing A BEAR IN A FIELD OF WILD FLOWERS AT SUNSET!

Tomorrow will begin our first full day of adventure at Yellowstone National Park. Tonight I will sleep in my makeshift  bed across the back seat of my minivan. Our second night in the van.

7.4.14 American Independence Day!

Day 17-
Driving overnight from Wisconsin to South Dakota was miserable! We completed so much on the previous day with little rest. There was very little rest on this night too. I began to see things in the distance. Even when we traded we driver - passenger/sleeper roles, I had strange visions in my dreams. One of which was a faceless Virgin Mary. I blame that on Rene Magritte. We saw the sun rise over the plains.

Eventually after multiple shifts, we arrived to the Badlands of South Dakota. They were beautiful! unreal! I couldn't comprehend. How did all these formations exist?

We walked around a loop and then found the Notch Trail. It was fun to pretend we were on a treasure hunt, searching for trail markers. I don't have much experience hiking but I am interested. We walked along the trail not knowing exactly which direction to go, knowing that we would soon find an answer. Life. That is how it is. once we reached the end of the trail, Christina faced her fear of heights and began to climb higher. It was a good experience. We were free to explore at dawn.

After Badlands, we continued to celebrate Independence day at Mount Rushmore. I was not a fan. I did not understand why someone would carve these faces on this mountain of all places. There were so many people. I didn't care enough. The carving techniques were interesting.

We stopped by Gillette,Wyoming for food. We needed more salad in our bodies. We found Smiling Moose Deli and spent a good two hours eating our Ancho Chipotle Lime Salads and relaxing. We needed to restock on supplies before we headed into Yellowstone National park the next day. We found an amazing sale at Rue 21 across the street. I found pants for $5. I was refreshing my wardrobe for this year. I intended to let go of the majority of the clothes that I brought with me in this trip. I had to throw away some pieces and I had a lot to give away. I am ready for new beginnings. We also stopped by Walmart. I love dehydrated veggies, almonds, and dried mango. I liked Gillette.

Once ready, we drove to Devil's Tower to camp for the night. We arrived and didn't know where to park or where to go we just pulled over along the side of the road with other spectators. we were not aware that they would host a firework show at Devil's Tower. We were exhausted and saw the explosions from our car. I got dark and we decided to sleep in the car. It would be our first night sleeping in the minivan. Stars were amazing in the open night sky.

7.3.14 Wisconsin AM... Minnesota PM

Day 16-
We arrived late last night in Madison, Wisconsin. A friend of Christina hosted us. We woke up early to get our car inspected at Chet's Car Care. Paul was at the desk and gave us several suggestions that we followed throughout our journey out of Wisconsin.

Before we left Madison in the morning, we had bagels with real Wisconsin cream cheese from Gotham Bagels. We took our breakfast to go and ate by Lake Mendota with ducks around us.

We tried to check out the FOREVERTRON but it was closed. We managed to sneak a few pictures by holding our cameras over the fence. It would have been cool to explore inside. We also stopped by Circus World in Baraboo, WI. We didn't have time to go in nor the desire to pay the entrance fee. I was just excited to be there. I picked up a few post cards with vintage circus posters on them. I felt like the children in the past that would try to trespass to get access but circuses are secured to hide their wonders unless you pay. I really want to pick up circus arts.

We went to the Leinenkugel Brewery and took a tour. We made it just before they closed. We stopped by a Culver's fast food restaurant before we left the stat of Wisconsin and indulged in more dairy products. We shared an order of cheese curds and a milkshake. The intention was to hold our hunger over until we arrived to Minnesota.

We arrived in Minneapolis and attempted to find Minnehaha Falls. We had a good walked before we gave up because we wanted to make sure that we had time to check out the Mall of America. I don't like malls. We didn't find anything worth buying and the amusement rides were shutting down for the night. We had dinner at Matt's Bar and ate their Jucy Lucy burger. That is one burger that will surely shorten your life span. It was good. Just beware of the hot cheese melted within the meat. The burger helped fuel us for our full night drive to Badlands.

7.1-2.14 Chicago, IL

Day 14-
My back hurt but I stretched it out. I slept the night before while we waited for the pizza. Christina planned out the route for the day. After adjusting and preparing in the car. An apple in hand, we walked down to Oak Street Beach. I was happy to feel the sand beneath my feet. Christina was happy to play in the water. I love how beautiful Chicago is in the summer!

We wandered through the streets into the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA). They had an Isa Genzken retrospective. There was also an exhibit called "Unbound: Contemprary Art After Frida Kahlo. There was one particular work of art by Shirin Neshat that really affected me. It was called "Turbulent" (1998) and if juxtaposed social acceptance of performances by male vs. female in her culture.

There was a farmer's market outside of the MCA. We walked to Waffles Cafe to experience the magic of WONUTS! We tried an array of flavor: Green Tea, Red velevt, Chocolate Chip Banana, and Mexican Chocolate.

We hiked through the city to get to Soldier Field for the FIFA 2014 World Cup Screening of the USA vs. Belgium match. we lost 1-2 and were disqualified from the game. After the game. we walked to: Lincoln Park, Buckingham Fountain, Cloud Gate "Bean", "Can", Marina City Complex, Millennium Park, and the city in general.

The night ended after a mexican food dinner, laundry, and uploading of pictures.

Day 15 -
Woke up - showered.
Walked to Mixed Greens for much needed vegetables. I ordered a Mexicali Salad.
field greens, corn, black beans, white cheddar cheese, cilantro, plum tomatoes, corn chips, and honey lime vinaigrette.

We went to the Art Institute of Chicago check out the Rene Magritte Exhibit. It was really great to see his early influences such as collage, film noir, mystery and stereoscopy.
Breaking apart words and meaning. Common motifs repeated. Replacing image with image vice versa.
No cameras allowed - no sketchbooks allowed? Really? Okay.
Strange experience silently walking through the crowded gallery space with strangers. We were engaged in a strange dance.

Wandering through the modern and contemporary wings. Resting on the strawberry couch waiting for rain to pass in Chicago. It was a cold, misty walk back to Erica's apartment.

Dinner at Cemitas Puebla before we parted ways and continued our trip. I had a Cemita Milanesa as seen on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives.

6.30.14 Grand Rapids, MI to Chicago, IL

Day 13-
We survived the night rainstorm.
Woke up to another beautiful day.
Christina and I packed up quickly and were desperately ready to leave the forest and move on in our adventures. We were even ready to go possibly the night before but we had responsibilities to the group. We waited another 2 hours to make sure that our entire camp was ready to go. Two of our friends had flights that left the next day. We decided to drop them off at the airport outside of Grand Rapids.
They were both from California and had not experienced Bob Evans before. We stopped for a late breakfast at 1pm. It was exactly what we all needed. We needed real breakfast food after days of partying. It was perfect!

After brunch, we parted ways. Christina and I continued out west. We made a detour to 3 Floyds Brewpub in Munster, Indiana. I tried the Atlas King. "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" play on the screens while the speakers blared metal music. It reminded me of the music my friends listened to in high school. After our drinks, we continued our Journey to Chicago.

THERE IS NO PARKING IN CHICAGO! I discovered an app "SpotHero" - it was really convenient. We met with Erica, another friend from Bonnaroo past, and drove until we found SpotHero reserved parking under the L. We arrived just as a major storm started. We entered Erica's studio apartment soaking wet. We were not going back out that night. instead we ordered Chicago deep dish stuffed pizza from Giordano's. It took forever to arrive because of the weather but it was delicious. We slept - it was glorious.

6.25-29.14 Electric Forest - Rothbury, MI

Day 8-
We left Columbus, OH. I burned my bottom lip with one very hot cup of coffee.
DROVE ALL DAY through Ohio & Michigan. We met with our Festival Family  in Grand Rapids  and caravan-ed to Electric Forest. We checked in for credentials and had to wait for our parking pass.
After 2 hours, Ellie happened to be at the right place at the right time. We went to the right person and proved that we were working tonight. He discreetly gave us passes. We parked in a vendor lot. We had to carry our gear into a forest! WE CAMPED IN A FOREST AT ELECTRIC FOREST!!! We set up camp with 10 people, 5 tents, and 2 canopies. I am so happy and excited to be here. I am trying to get rest but its not really happening. Our shift begins soon.

Day 9-
I like to dance with the hoop.
I don't like to make it do things.

I believe in the good things coming...

I want to be a giant. I will walk on stilts, fly the trapeze, silks!

1hr. Sherwood Forest Installations - a band of elves performing, hammocks, light shows, shelters, altars, mystery, and mayhem.

We worked last night from 12:45am - 9am.
I feel like I am exaggerating but it was ridiculously cold. I don't like being cold.
We didn't sleep. It was really hard. An easy task but painful to stay awake for. I tried to play with and juggle waters bottles and paint markers. I didn't have energy to play with my toroflux. Someone gave us cookies.

I spent the entire day sleeping. We went to the festival around 7pm. I saw Nahko & Medicine for the People. SPICY PIE! I went for the Hot Lips Houlin. We walked through Sherwood Forest. Sat in hammocks. Danced at Paper Diamond. We couldn't find water so we left during Glitch Mob. A $7 fresh berry lemonade refreshed me along with a sample gator hush puppie... so tired.

Day 10-
Work obligations complete - I worked another 12:45am - 9am shift. This time I was preparedwith an additional layer for sweat pants, hoodie, and a fleece blanket.
They didn't have any work for us. Eventually, they placed us in VIP. We had an awesome golf cart ride to the "Good Life" area. We passed by Lake Wildcat at night. We went behind the stages on access roads. The ride was bumpy and creepy. I was separated from my friends; they went to another post and I stayed at the "Good Life" concierge table. I helped people with simple questions, charging their phones, and sharing event schedules. We were right next to the Good Life stage. They have private after hours shows for the Good Life people.

I spent the night awake, listening to Dustin Thomas, Nahko, and Cherub. The last few hours were especially painful after the music ended. I saw the sun rise. I could use the nice VIP bathrooms :). The people I worked with were cool. We survived tge night. I took a shower after I checked out of my shift and then I went to sleep.

I feel so lazy and I don't want to do anything but hang out at camp. Clouds look amazing! I will go to the festival later today. No expectations.

Nahko in the Forest Observatory - Papadosio - String Cheese Incident
---
12th Planet - Group Totems. Lights. Lazers. Stars. Trees.

Sherwood Forest - Finding the nest. Moving - the hardest part is getting up. Difficult to be still. To breathe. Everything is moving. Vibrations everywhere. So much energy. Overwhelming. Trying to be centered.

ZEDD - I'm alive! I'm alive! I'm alive!

Excision - Exhaustion - done! My body still moves as long as there is music. Electric energy. Machine vs Nature.

Day 11-
I am alive. Christina is alive.
We rested. We survived the night.
There is so much happening here.
We went to the Hoop Troupe Showcase before returning to camp to meet back with our Festival Family. We prepared for the night... it took a really long time to get ready.
---
I saw Stephen Marley. I danced reggae in the sunlight underneath the sky on the ground/Earth in front of the stage. I am a lion.

Taco Love explosion in our mouths. Deeply appreciative of all the care that Tacos has provided and shared with us.

We wandered into the forest afterwards. We waited in Sherwood Court for Flying Lotus. We discovered that tickles are electronic transfers of vibrations. Energy moves from one end to another.
Sunsets of ATM. Understanding of commerce and capital. Universe. Negative sinking feeling.
Eventually Christina and I wandered away from the group. We made it to the front of the stage to see the man behind the screen. He reminded me of the Wizard of Oz. He had a really great production.

After Flying Lotus, we tried to leave. We barely made it past the forest entrance when we were distracted by a hammock. We both climbed into it and watched everyone go by us in the forest. it was like we were sitting in a boat in the ocean of life. The forest scares me. All the visualizations are production. Optical illusions. Nothing is real. It is all a big production. Trigger simulations.

We managed to will our energy and escape the forest. We ate Spicy Pie on our way back to camp. We fell asleep early with the rain and bass in the distance.

Day 12-
So tired and irritable.
I am tired of bass drops, fire crackers, house music, and fools wandering around.

Today is a day of rest. We did yoga at Tripolee Stage with Hanna Muse. It was exactly what our bodies needed. We showered after yoga and relaxed at camp.
Christina and I split away. We went spent the afternoon at the Ranch Stage. I danced to Bombino. I had a Bells Oberon and laid down to rest in the sun during Aloe Blacc. We found our way to a position in the front and center for Matt & Kim. It was fun but the people around us really bothered me. Some were not kind or understanding. They lacked mindfulness.
We got Spicy Pie on our way out of the festival. Currently resting at camp. Trying to get a quick nap before Tycho and Cut Copy.

"We are in the woods listening to Bohemian Rhapsody in the woods." - Smiling at the idea and then the bass dropped and we just stared at each other with the same look...

We didn't successfully get back up again. We were supposed to meet Tacos @ 11:30pm. I wokeup in a rush at 11:45pm, got dressed and fell back asleep in my sleeping bag.
We were done with the forest.
I woke up again at 1:30am - the music was still going. Tacos found me and I joined the tribe one last time before the rain fell that night.
Christina and I were beyond exhausted. The drum and bass was relentless. I wish I had spent more time exploring the wonders of the forest.

KASKADE & DEADMAU5 - "Move for Me"

Adventures in Cat Sitting in NW DC

Karma is wonderful. Earlier this summer I was blessed that my friend could take and provide care for my cat while I was away. It was a bit traumatic for me. I had just lost his brother to urinary crystals and I knew that my surviving cat was depressed. I was going to be away for 6 weeks and needed someone to keep him company and give him attention. Nemo Cat is really attached to me.

This weekend I am returning the favor and taking care of her two little cats while she is in Miami. I have been using the time in her home to really focus and get things done. The first day of school is approaching. Officially, we begin this Monday. Until then, I am planning to relax and try to get myself into the place I need to be in order to be prepared for my little ones. I was called out on my lack of presence today. I didn't sleep much last night and was struggling to stay awake during today's meeting. I made it through a whole week of staff meetings at 3 different schools. It is Friday night and I have so much to do still. Being in my friend's home has given me a chance to really sit down and focus. I cannot be distracted by my surroundings as I would be in my home. I don't have any control over the things in here and so I must control the work that I brought with me to complete.

Focus. Commitments. Responsibility. I need to leave soon to pick up supplies for the Kizomba Social and fulfill my role... challenge accepted. Stillness will be granted soon. I am trying to find balance in the turbulence of shifting change.

Learning to let go. Not looking back. Move forward. Advance. Succeed.
