It is Snowing!

So here is the possible dilemma...

Could I be able to travel for six weeks with only a back pack?

Do I want to limit myself only to a carryon? What are the dimensions?
Carryon (22" x 14" x 9") + Personal item (17" x 10" x 9")
African Safari means that we will be traveling by 4 x4 Land Cruisers and that I'll need to carry a soft flexible duffel bag type. I am limited to less than 34" W by 17" H by 15" L.

What is the destination?
